The Inherited Trait


Though my grandfather was a knapper and his hands were robust and rough, he could draw nice pictures, he could make various things of everyday need and he could carve out of wood a lot of toys for his grandchildren including me. Also he could repair various working tools or make new ones as the cottage, the garden and the household demanded. In short, he was very skilfull, good at more than the well-known nine crafts (and the tenth indigency as it is said here in The Czech Republic).
Let´s stop for a while with his pictures, ´cause it is a significant talent inherited by his son, my father, especially after him. If  his wife could cook as she could draw, they could´t survive!
I don´t know where his art works came to. They are lost forever but not so in my memory, at least some of them. A few of them hung on some walls of the household, that is in the hall, in the kitchen and in the sleeping room. Small B and W ink-drawings in woody frames, the frames made by my grandfather, too. He drew only animals, mostly various birds and mammals, I´ve remembered a courting capercailzie sitting on a branch. First he drew an animal with a pencil and then used ink for lines and shading, his ink-drawings weren´t coloured.
When I think of him I must unhat before him. He was so much busy both at home and at work and despite of this he always found a time for his hobbies. The drawing is a fine work and still his heavy hands from the work in the stone pit were able to do it. My Father told me that in his youth they had no electricity and they had to light with the kerosene lamp.
The granddady could draw only after all day slavery during evenings and then in a mild shimmering light of the kerosene lamp.

Zděděná vloha

I když byl můj děda kameník a ruce měl velké a drsné, uměl kreslit hezké obrázky, uměl zhotovovat různé věci každodenní potřeby a dokázal ze dřeva vyřezávat spousty hraček pro svá vnoučata včetně mně. Uměl také opravit všemožné pracovní nástroje nebo vyrobit nové podle potřeb chalupy, zahrady a domácnosti. Zkrátka byl velice šikovný, dobrý ve více než dobře známých devatero řemeslech (a desáté bídě, jak se tady v Česku říká).
Zastavme se na chvíli u jeho obrázků, protože to je významný talent, který jeho syn, můj otec, speciálně zdědil po něm. Kdyby jeho žena uměla vařit jako uměla kreslit, nemohli by přežít!
Nevím, kam se jeho výtvory poděly. Jsou navždy ztraceny, ale ne tak v mé paměti, alespoň některé z nich. Pár jich viselo na některých stěnách domácnosti, tzn. v předsíni, v kuchyni a v ložnici. Malé ČB pérovky v dřevěných rámečcích, které si děda také dělal. Kreslil jenom zvířata, povětšinou různé ptáky a savce, vzpomínám si na tokajícího tetřeva hlušce sedícího na větvi. Nejdřív nakreslil zvíře tužkou a pak použil tuš na linie a stínování, pérovky nekoloroval.
Když o něm přemítám, musím před ním smeknout. Byl tolik zaměstnaný doma i v práci a přesto si našel čas na své koníčky. Kreslení je jemná práce a přece to jeho těžké ruce od práce v kamenolomu zvládaly. Táta mi vyprávěl, že když byl malý, neměli elektřinu a museli svítit petrolejkou. Děda mohl kreslit jen po celodenní dřině po večerech a pak v tlumeném třepotavém světle petrolejky.
